Showerhead Types Explained
Rainshower
: A full-body drenching experience that makes you feel like you're standing in a rainstorm. Usually they are installed from the ceiling, but they can be on an extending arm from a wall mount or from a riser mount. They come in various shapes including Raindrop, Centurion, or Sunflower. They also come in varying sizes, from 8-12".
Adjustable
: They offer a range of pressure from a light to powerful spray. Depending on the model they can pulse or change positioning. Usually they come as a wall, riser, or hand-held model, which provides extended mobility and flexibility.
Shower Spa
: These more expensive setups are the pinnacle of the shower experience giving a full-body spray from the top and sides, much like a luxury spa treatment.
Keep in Mind Before Buying
- If you know that your home has low shower pressure or you have a large household where everyone showers at the same time every morning, be wary about purchasing a rainshower
head for two reasons:
- They are usually less powerful than their adjustable counterparts, which have much smaller heads, hot water runs out quicker.
- If you have low pressure already, it will feel even lower than normal unless the pressure regulator is replaced while installing it.
- If you like very hot showers, remember that some heads that aerate the water to make it feel more abundant actually cause the water to cool down by 15 degrees, so in that case you may want to look at either an adjustable head, or at a rainshower head that comes equipped with a temperature gauge adjustment.
- Water type can also affect how you choose a showerhead. If your area has hard water, then opt for a plastic or rubber head instead of a metal one, as they are less likely to become clogged by calcium deposits.
